How to Discount Double-Counting When It Counts: Some Clarifications
نویسنده
چکیده
The issues of double-counting, use-constructing, and selection effects have long been the subject of debate in the philosophical as well as statistical literature. I have argued that it is the severity, stringency, or probativeness of the test—or lack of it—that should determine if a double-use of data is admissible. Hitchcock and Sober ([2004]) question whether this ‘severity criterion’ can perform its intended job. I argue that their criticisms stem from a flawed interpretation of the severity criterion. Taking their criticism as a springboard, I elucidate some of the central examples that have long been controversial, and clarify how the severity criterion is properly applied to them. 1 Severity and Use-Constructing: Four Points (and Some Clarificatory Notes) 1.1 Point 1: Getting beyond ‘all or nothing’ standpoints 1.2 Point 2: The rationale for prohibiting double-counting is the requirement that tests be severe 1.3 Point 3: Evaluate severity of a test T by its associated construction rule R 1.4 Point 4: The ease of passing vs. ease of erroneous passing: Statistical vs. ‘Definitional’ probability 2 The False Dilemma: Hitchcock and Sober 2.1 Marsha measures her desk reliably

Heegaard Floer Homology, Double Points and Nice Diagrams
The Heegaard Floer chain complexes are defined by counting embedded curves in Σ×[0, 1]×R. In [Lip06], it was shown that the chain complex ĈF can be elaborated by taking into account curves with double points. In this note, we extend results of Manolescu-Ozsváth-Sarkar and Sarkar-Wang on computing CFK and ĈF to this elaborated complex. The extension has a particularly nice form for grid diagrams...
متن کاملOverstating the evidence – double counting in meta-analysis and related problems
BACKGROUND The problem of missing studies in meta-analysis has received much attention. Less attention has been paid to the more serious problem of double counting of evidence. METHODS Various problems in overstating the precision of results from meta-analyses are described and illustrated with examples, including papers from leading medical journals. These problems include, but are not limit...
متن کاملCalibration of Fair Social Discount Rate in Utilizing Iran Oil Resources: An Islamic View Point
There is a long tradition in economics about the question of whether intergenerational discounting is fair or not. Ramsey (1928) was the first economist that criticized the discounting and mentioned that the just rate of discounting is zero. In this paper it was tried to calculate the just rate of discounting for Iran with respect to Islamic thoughts. According to Islam, intergenerational just...
متن کاملUpper limits from counting experiments with multiple pipelines
In counting experiments, one can set an upper limit on the rate of a Poisson process based on a count of the number of events observed due to the process. In some experiments, one makes several counts of the number of events, using different instruments, different event detection algorithms or observations over multiple time intervals. We demonstrate how to generalize the classical frequentist ...
متن کاملDouble-counting of intracardiac electrogram during biatrial pacing.
BACKGROUND Biatrial pacing has a significant problem with memory function that misinterprets normal sinus rhythm as atrial tachyarrhythmias and in addition estimation of the atrial pacing thresholds (biatrial and uniatrial pacing thresholds) is sometimes difficult because of small P waves. METHODS AND RESULTS The intracardiac electrograms recorded by a pacemaker in 10 patients (age, 66.7+/-10...
